Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, 2 today, Monday, August 26, 2024, stressed the “need to end the tragedy facing the Palestinian people in Gaza immediately,” warning of the outbreak of a regional war.

Sisi received a telephone call from his Bulgarian counterpart Rumen Radev, who discussed the distinguished course of bilateral cooperation between the two countries.. And the situation in the Middle East and the Gaza Strip,” according to a statement by the Egyptian presidency.

Al-Sisi reviewed ” the latest developments in Egyptian efforts to reach a ceasefire and enforce humanitarian assistance,” and stressed the need to end the tragedy facing the Palestinian people in Gaza immediately.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel, with American support, has been waging a war on Gaza, which has left about 134 thousand dead and injured Palestinians, mostly children and women, and more than 10 thousand missing, amid massive destruction and a deadly famine.

Qatar, Egypt and the United States are mediating stalled indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas to reach an agreement to stop the war and exchange prisoners.

Sisi also stressed”the importance of the international community playing a decisive role with regard to the international recognition of the Palestinian state, in order to support the path of peace in the region and the two-state solution”.

He warned that”the continuation of the ongoing escalation puts the region hostage to the possibility of the war expanding regionally, and the resulting serious consequences for all the peoples of the region”.

For his part, the Bulgarian president praised”Egypt’s efforts to calm down in the region, and Egypt’s firm role as a regional peace and stability force,” according to the Egyptian statement.

There are growing fears of the possibility of a regional war, at a time when Israel is preparing a retaliatory response from Iran over the assassination of the head of the Hamas political bureau Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran at the end of last July, in an operation for which Israel has not denied or confirmed responsibility.
