The minister of Environment participates in the celebration of the standards and Quality Authority as the first service government institution to launch its first report on its carbon footprint

Dr. Yasmin Fouad, Minister of Environment, participated in the celebration of the completion of the Egyptian authority for Standardization and quality of preparing its first carbon footprint report, and her arrival to the first government service institution to submit this report under the slogan “specifications and quality .. The best performance .. Green performance ” in the presence of the team engineer Kamel al-Wazir, Deputy Prime Minister for industrial development and Minister of industry and Transport, Dr. Mohamed Farid, chairman of the EFSA, Dr. Khaled Hassan Sofy, chairman of the board of Directors of the Egyptian General Authority for Standardization and quality, Dr. harmogeny nestegma, secretary general of the African Organization for Standardization (ARSO), and Ms. Ann Shaw, deputy ambassador of the European Union to Egypt.

Dr. Yasmin Fouad congratulated Lieutenant General Kamel al-Wazir, deputy prime minister for industrial development and Minister of industry and Transport, for renewing the European accreditation organization’s recognition of the accreditation of the National Accreditation Council and passing the technical proficiency tests to become an accreditation and certification body.

The minister of Environment praised the extended cooperation with the Egyptian authority for specifications and quality in focusing on the environmental component, the most important fruits of which are the issuance of 16 specifications for the recycling of construction and demolition waste, cooperation over 10 years in the field of specifications for cooling and air conditioning media within Egypt’s obligations under the United Nations ozone Convention, and the cooperation that was done with the authority in the preparation of specifications for single-use plastic bags.

The minister of Environment pointed to the launch of the first voluntary carbon market in Egypt a few weeks ago as an important step in the path of reducing carbon emissions for enterprises, taking advantage of the sale of carbon certificates in a non-financial instrument through the Egyptian Stock Exchange, which increases the opportunities for supply and demand to contribute to the emergence of these projects.

It was appreciated by Dr. Yasmin Fouad, Deputy Prime Minister for industrial development and Minister of industry and transport, expressed his interest in making his first visits in the new government to factories that seek environmental compatibility, as a key element to increase exports, through taking waste recycling measures, relying on industrial waste treatment plants, and increasing raw material production lines, which provides a direct message, which is to seek to harmonize between achieving industrial development, taking into account environmental dimensions, the health of surrounding communities, export requirements, and meeting international obligations.

The minister of Environment pointed out Egypt’s keenness to fulfill its obligations in the implementation of the Paris climate agreement despite its emissions not exceeding 1% of the global emissions volume, as Egypt has submitted its voluntary national contributions plan, which requires technology transfer, but Egypt is working to provide a supportive climate for companies in partnership with the concerned ministries, to achieve a real reduction in carbon emissions, and joint gains through the voluntary carbon market, but without declaring carbon taxes, which provides incentive and facilitative tools to finance the direction of companies to reduce their carbon footprint.

Dr. Yasmin Fouad also appreciated the support of the European Union to Egypt in the implementation of many special projects to reduce greenhouse emissions, and praised the constellation of experts involved in the calculation of greenhouse emissions within the preparation of the first carbon footprint report of the standards and Quality Commission, which reflects its keenness as a national body took upon itself to be an example in building national cadres capable of calculating direct and indirect emissions in order to reduce them.

The ceremony included a video presentation on the environmental performance activities of the public authority for Standardization and quality, and two sessions were held, one on the application of the carbon footprint in the government and private sector, where it dealt with a report on the carbon footprint of the standards and Quality Authority, in addition to presenting the role of the private sector in the application of the carbon footprint, and the second session included the role of the carbon footprint and its impact on climate change, during which topics were presented about the strategy of the Ministry of industry in applying the carbon footprint, carbon certificates and their positive and negative impact on securities, the basics of calculating the footprint in addition to the role of the National Council for the accreditation of verification and certification bodies in the field of The carbon footprint.

This came within the framework of the authority’s keenness to participate in the implementation of the strategic plan of the Egyptian state to achieve the sustainability of resources and reduce emissions, where the authority formed a team of high-level expertise and competencies to prepare the carbon footprint report of the authority in order to rationalize the consumption of resources and reduce emissions. the authority also established a verification and certification unit to be the first of its kind approved in Egypt to issue carbon footprint reports in cement products.
