Dr. Yasmin Fouad, Minister of Environment, went to the emirate of Sharjah on a field visit to the headquarters of the Emirati environment group specialized in recycling and sustainability in the United Arab Emirates, in order to discuss ways to enhance joint cooperation with the company in the implementation of the municipal and medical waste management system in Egypt, and the conversion of waste to energy, in the presence of Engineer Khalid Abbas, Chairman and managing director of administrative capital Urban Development Company, His Excellency Dr. Hossam Ismail, Consul General of the Arab Republic of Egypt in Dubai, and Mr. Yasser Abdullah, Assistant Minister and acting head of waste management organization, Ms. Yasmin Salem Assistant Minister For government coordination.

Dr. Yasmin Fouad and her accompanying delegation were received by H. E. Sheikh Fahim Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Sharjah Government Relations Department, H. E. Omar Khalfan bin harimel Al Shamsi, chairman of the Municipalities Affairs Department, Khaled al harimel, CEO and vice chairman of Beya group, Fahad Shaheel, executive director of the environment sector, Zuhair Sabra, executive director of the investment sector, Mr. Jamal aljajar, representative of the emirate of Sharjah, Mohammed Al Hassani, executive director of sustainability at the company.

Dr. Yasmin Fouad stressed that this visit comes within the framework of the Egyptian state’s keenness to identify the best experiences to implement an integrated waste management system, and encourage investment in all stages of the system from the collection, transportation and recycling of all types of waste, whether municipal, agricultural, medical, demolition and construction .Waste management of all kinds is one of the investment areas benefiting from the green incentives in the new investment law.

She was praised by Dr. Yasmin Fouad has been cooperating fruitfully with the company over the past years in the implementation of a number of activities, projects and contributions made by “Environment” Company in Egypt, including the joint venture with the administrative capital Urban Development Company to manage the waste system in the new administrative capital, and the partnership also in assuming the task of managing the waste system in Sharm el Sheikh during Egypt’s hosting of the cop27 climate conference in ٢٠٢٢, stressing that the visit aims to consolidate joint relations and discuss prospects for cooperation to achieve the goals of sustainability, economic development and carbon neutrality.

During her visit, the minister of Environment listened to a detailed presentation about the company’s status in the UAE and abroad, the company’s capital and investments in the Waste Management System, the company’s work and contributions to the waste management and energy conversion system, the type of technology used, innovative projects and services provided by Environment Group, in addition to its advanced facilities, especially the Sharjah waste to energy conversion plant.

During the visit, Dr. Yasmin Fouad reviewed a number of UAE experiences in the field of Integrated Waste Management, where she inspected the cleaning company responsible for the collection, transport and street cleaning system in Sharjah, as well as inspected the models of waste collection operations, and models of containers for the separation process next to the equipment used in the collection, transport and street cleaning operations, and also inspected the Centers for the collection of edible oils .

The visit also included Dr. Yasmin Fouad visiting the waste conversion plant for energy in Sharjah and getting acquainted with the technology used, where the waste is used after separation, the plant is a partnership between environment and Masdar UAE, a complete model for the recycling of demolition and construction waste was inspected from the separation process to the final product, and the plant was inspected for biomechanical treatment for the production of alternative fuel RDF from industrial, commercial and municipal waste, and also the production of organic fertilizer, whether resulting from the process of chopping agricultural waste or organic waste.

Dr. Yasmin Fouad also inspected the process of chopping agricultural waste and converting it into biofuel or alternative fuel for cement factories, and learned how to reach the highest calorific value of the product for alternative fuel for these wastes to ensure optimal use inside the cement factory.the site for medical waste was also inspected and reviewed the chopping and sterilization processes for these wastes, and special cars to collect medical waste. He inspected the part of the old landfill for municipal waste in Sharjah, which was completely closed, where the closure procedures were reviewed.

During the visit, the minister of Environment presented a number of investment opportunities in the field of medical and agricultural waste and the conversion of waste into energy, and Environment company has expressed its consent to inject more investments in these areas, and a number of meetings will be held with the concerned ministries to ensure that these investments are made in the field of Integrated Waste Management and facilitate all procedures during the coming period.

Dr. Yasmin Fouad confirmed that during the past five years, Egypt has been able to make a great progress in building an infrastructure for an integrated waste management system, and is working to complete it in all governorates of the Republic with continuous follow-up from the political leadership and direct instructions from His Excellency President Sisi on the need for an integrated waste management system, and cooperation has been to ensure the success of the system, work was carried out to involve the private sector in the collection, transportation, burial, recycling and cleaning operations، In addition to working to integrate the informal sector into the system and provide social and health insurance for them, pointing to the great progress achieved by Egypt in recent years, both at the level of environmental legislation in general ,and the field of waste management in particular, and was a national priority, and the success in issuing the Law No. 202 of 2020 on Waste Management, whose philosophy is based on the idea of a circular economy, pointing out that the Egyptian Ministry of Environment has achieved successful steps in alignment with the industrial sector, through the entry of cement companies in the field of waste recycling and expanding the production of alternative fuels and its use
